THE VILLAGE WALK
An Insight into Historical Chiang Mai City with Tamarind Village
Staying at the Tamarind Village Chiang Mai is a wonderful experience providing a deep insight into the traditional Northern culture of Chiang Mai. More than anywhere else in town, you will gain a sense of local traditions and culture in a high-end, stylish atmosphere.
Located at the heart of historic Chiang Mai, Tamarind Village exudes the Lanna way of life. The hotel’s architecture is inspired by a traditional Northern style courtyard surrounding a magnificent 200 years old tamarind tree, after which the hotel is named. Entering your room you are first welcomed by the delicious scent of local flowers and the soft lighting. Rooms and suites are built with whitewashed plaster walls set against dark timber beams. They are uniquely decorated with handmade bowls and trays made of lacquerware, with colourful hilltribe textile rugs and cushions, offsetting delicate ceramics.
This serene boutique property is dedicated to the preservation of Lanna culture and provides guests with an understanding of Northern Thai identity. In-house activities include relaxing by the quiet swimming pool, pampering yourself at The Village Spa, discovering the art exhibition in the hotel’s alley and joining daily cultural activities under the tamarind tree (complimentary every day from 3pm to 4 pm, except Sundays). These activities range from making spa herbal compresses, flower garland weaving, paper umbrella painting, banana and lotus leaf folding or making colourful “Tung”, traditional Lanna flags, which is a firm favorite with the little ones.
And the latest activity at Tamarind Village is the Village Walk: a complimentary 2-hours walking tour through the old city surrounding the property, accompanied by a private guide. After savoring your breakfast at Ruen Tamarind Restaurant, a member of the hotel staff will guide you through this historic area. He will bring along a woven pinto (multi-tiered lunch box) for alms offering at Duang Dee Temple. In addition to architectural and historical details, your guide will walk you through the tradition of alms offering in Chiang Mai and you will be blessed by a Thai monk. This walk also takes you to the Three Kings Monument, the ancient Court of Chiang Mai and the Tax Office buildings, two beautiful places now transformed as museums, as well as two other temples which both have a beautiful history. All through the walk, your guide will give you tips and information about traditions, beliefs, local cuisine, street food and famous restaurants to visit within the vicinity. Walking back to the tranquil Tamarind Hotel, the shiny blue swimming pool will be waiting for you to jump in.
Staying at Tamarind Village, the Village Walk is a unique tour and definitely an activity not to be missed! It gives you the opportunity to dive deeply into the true cultural identity of the region in a way that is unique to Tamarind Village.
